Nov 12, 2007—The SImcoe (Canada) rReformer reported that Members of the local tobacco board met Monday with the "Regional Transition Working Group of Rural Economic Development" made up of area Mayors and Wardens. Among them was Norfolk Mayor Dennis Travale.
They discussed the disastrous situation facing tobacco farm families, and our communities. Following the meeting they issued this statement:
"Leaders of tobacco-growing municipalities are supporting the need for urgent action as the situation facing the tobacco growers has shown significant negative ramifications on the health, economic and social well-being of our communities. We strongly urge the federal and provincial governments to get together and implement a plan to deal with this immediately."
New Tobacco Board Chair Tom McElhone says they appreciate the strong support, and will continue work to try and bring a resolution as quickly as possible.
