Kentucky growers finally see a little excess rain
Oct 24, 2007
Welcome rains improved the topsoil moisture for Kentucky farmers last week.

For the first time in 12 weeks, rainfall in the Bluegrass State was above normal – 1.10 inches statewide, which was .27 inches above normal for the week ending October 22.

While the rain did little for the late crops – and virtually nothing for the burley tobacco – it improved the soil moisture indicators for the first time all season. Topsoil moisture was rated 81 percent short or very short, but 18 percent rated at adequate. Subsoil moisture was rated 64 percent very short and 29 percent short, with seven percent rated adequate.

Housed tobacco condition was rated 16 percent poor and 3 percent very poor, 27 percent fair, 43 percent good and 11 percent excellent. 18 percent of tobacco had been stripped, compared to 15 percent at this time last year. The 18 percent strippage was on par with the state’s five-year average.

Growers were reporting good weights on their tobacco.
