Virginia tobacco yields forecast is down
Sep 17, 2007—Virginia’ tobacco crops will see reduced yields this season as a result of the drought and an unusually hot August.
The USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service Richmond field office reported from its September survey that flue-cured tobacco yield was forecast at 2,000 pounds per acre, with 36 million pounds harvested from 18,000 acres. That forecast is 13 percent off last year’s crop.
Burley yield is forecast at 1,900 pounds per acre, with 4,200 million pounds from 2,200 acres. That yield is 200 pounds per acre below last season, harvesting 400,000 pounds less on 100 acres less than in 2006.
Fire tobacco is forecast to yield 2,000 pounds an acre, with nearly 800,000 pounds harvested from 400 acres.
