Sep 12, 2007
Kentucky tobacco crops are struggling to cure in some areas as the dry weather has made it difficult to cure the crop.

The USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service’s weekly report for the Bluegrass State showed that there have been reports of the leaf drying fast instead of curing, Farmers with this problem have been spraying water into their barns to create some moisture to insure better curing conditions.

64 percent of the burley crop has been cut, with 70 percent of dark tobacco cut. Yields are suffering due to the dry conditions.

Topsoil moisture in Kentucky continues to be scarce, with 66 percent rated very short and another 26 percent rated short. Subsoil moisture is worse, with 72 percent rated very short and another 23 percent rated short.
