U.S. House approves Farm Bill
Sep 4, 2007—The U.S. House of Representatives passed its updated version of the Farm Bill, the structured guidelines through which the state’s farming community will seek assistance for farming prosperity. The Farm Bill is crucial to farming states to the billions of dollars agriculture for their economies.
Senators will begin reviewing the legislation, likely in September. Once the Senate completes and passes a revised version of the bill, they and the House will meet in a conference committee to work out the differences between the two bills.
One notable advance in the bill was the adoption of a tobacco amendment. That amendment was implemented into the Farm Bill by two North Carolina representatives, U.S. Rep. Robin Hayes and U.S. Rep. Bob Etheridge. It seeks to make federal dollars available to expand foreign markets for tobacco, a plus for tobacco farmers ready for larger market production.
“I look forward to the positive effects this will have on our tobacco farmers in North Carolina,” Hayes said.
