SC leaf estimates go up
South Carolina’s flue-cured tobacco crop is projected to increase 2 percent from last year’s totals.
Forecasts for the Palmetto State are for 37 million pounds of leaf, up 1.1 million pounds from last month. Yield has also increased, with the 2,250 pounds per acre projection at 150 pounds more than last year and 50 pounds bigger than last month. Acreage for harvest is down 1,000 acres from 2006 at 410,000 acres.
The projections were provided by the National Agricultural Statistics Service, a branch of the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
