Growers fear being “left out” in regulation

An article in the Lexington, Ky., Herald-Leader describes tobacco growers’ concerns about possible regulation of tobacco products by the FDA.

Such legislation is expected to be introduced soon and stands a good chance of passing in the new Democrat-led Congress.

With the price-support program dead, no one is keeping track of where or how tobacco is being grown, where it is imported from or what’s in imported tobacco. Many growers want the government to monitor production and hold domestic and foreign products to the same standards.

The article contends that growers’ concerns may not be addressed in the bills.
